For 2023: Writings on the Traditions

While the Twelve Steps of A.R.T.S. Anonymous guide us to recover our inspiration and joy in expressing our creativity, the Twelve Traditions guide our focus on our primary purpose in A.R.T.S. Anonymous. What better way to begin this new year of 2023 than with a focus on the Tradition that corresponds with each of the twelve months. Below in this August issue of the newsletter is one member’s personal response to Tradition 8.

September’s Newsletter welcomes your response to Tradition 9: A.R.T.S., as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

We suggest the following series of questions when writing your response.

  • What does Tradition 9 mean to you?
  • How do you feel about Tradition 9?
  • How may Tradition 9 help your creative expression?

It will be wonderful to receive your thoughts, feelings, and application of Tradition 9. Please send your response to the editors at newsletter@artsanonymous.org for possible publication.

Tradition Eight – A Personal Response

Tradition 8:  A.R.T.S. should remain forever non-professional, but our service centers may employ special workers.

One of the most important things I was ever told about Tradition Eight was the adage: “For Fun and for Free.” And I see that what we give to each other in meetings, in sponsorship and in service has no dollar sign attached to it. And that we give to others out of love, fellowship and for the fun of it. This Tradition is particularly poignant for us as an artist's fellowship as we have ARTShares; we play music, read poetry, do comedy, perform for each other and display our many other art forms. In the professional world outside A.R.T.S., shows are ticketed, and our art is shown to be sold or for financial gain in some way. In A.R.T.S. we share our art to share an important part of ourselves with other members for our own recovery and to inspire others; if we can do it, so can they. For Fun and for Free.

Service is something that we also give freely, and what we give is our time and often a lot of hard work. This service we give can be opening a meeting, either face-to-face or online, leading a meeting, sponsoring or anything from being a Group Secretary to a Delegate to being on the Board of Trustees. All the service work that goes into coming together and creating a successful World Service Conference is phenomenal. There are many other ways that we help others, and through that ultimately giving to ourselves and our art.

The World Service Conference – 2023

Each A.R.T.S. group is autonomous unless their decisions affect other groups, or the entire Fellowship. Therefore, the World Service Conference (WSC), has the responsibility to provide guidance to the meetings, the Board of Trustees, and on issues affecting A.R.T.S. Anonymous as a whole.

Delegates elected by your meeting, the A.R.T.S. Board members and all interested members of the Fellowship will be meeting for about 16 hours across three daysFriday October 13, Saturday October 14 and Saturday October 21, 2023. Each day of the World Service Conference begins at 2 pm ET (unless otherwise changed by the Pre-Conference). All sessions will be held on Zoom. A registration link will be provided later in August.

What does the World Service Conference do?

A.R.T.S. Anonymous follows the structure of Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-Step programs, using the Twelve Traditions as its guide. The WSC does not govern. It is the embodiment of the group conscience of all the groups (meetings).

Report from the Special World Service Conference Day:
July 15, 2023

The Conference Planning Committee is taking a moment to acknowledge the incredibly hard and Higher-Powered work of all the Delegates and Alternates of the A.R.T.S. World Service Conference.

The July 15 Special-One Day Conference for the purposes of approving pamphlet literature (updates to Facing Avoidance and approving On Being the Perfect Artist) passed all five motions presented by this Committee, by far more than the 2/3 majority required by the 1995 Literature Development Process. One motion passed unanimously, and there was very near consensus on the rest. The minority opinion was heard in every case.

Seventeen Meeting Delegates and six Board members attended. A non-delegate Participant also came, which all members of A.R.T.S. are welcome to do. Although it took some time to get everyone on the Zoom and review the etiquette for attendance, the voting guidelines, the Community-Solving Method and make introductions, the motions themselves passed in about 3 hours and 45 minutes. The willingness of the Conference to go beyond the time frame originally asked for to move through all the motions was surprising to some of us. It seemed there was a level of engagement with the material and the process from those present that was quite heartening. We can live in the hope for the continuing success of the A.R.T.S. program and its members to carry the message to the next struggling artist.

The report for the Special One-Day Conference is posted on the website. Any member of A.R.T.S. is welcome to join the Conference Planning Committee. It meets every first Saturday of the month. Please email conference@artsanonymous.org for questions or comments.

To Be or Not to Be... A Delegate to the World Service Conference!

Who/What is a delegate?

Delegates are the representatives to the World Service Conference (WSC) who have the right to vote. (In other programs delegates who represent the groups are called “GSRs” or Group Service Representatives.) Delegates include: One or two elected and registered representatives from each A.R.T.S. Anonymous group (Meeting Delegates) and members of the Board of Trustees.

What does a delegate do?

Delegates attend the annual World Service Conference (WSC) meetings and stay in communication with World Services and the WSBC. Special meetings of the WSC may be called if necessary. Right now, we are in a temporary organizational stage, called Pre-Conference. It is important for delegates to attend the Pre-Conference meetings, as these are an opportunity to make the voice of the meetings heard as well as to make decisions about how the actual WSC will run. This can really make a difference for the future of A.R.T.S. Anonymous!
