For 2023: Writings on the
Traditions
While the Twelve Steps of
A.R.T.S Anonymous guide us to
recover our inspiration and joy
in expressing our creativity,
the Twelve Traditions guide our
focus on our primary purpose in
A.R.T.S. Anonymous. What better
way to begin this new year of
2023 than with a focus on the
Tradition that corresponds with
each of the twelve months. Below
in this July issue of the
newsletter is one member’s
personal response to Tradition
7.
August’s Newsletter welcomes
your response to
Tradition 8: A.R.T.S. should
remain forever non-professional,
but our service centers may
employ special workers.
We suggest the following series
of questions when writing your
response.
-
What does Tradition 8 mean
to you?
-
How do you feel about
Tradition 8?
-
How may Tradition 8 help
your creative expression?
It will be wonderful to receive
your thoughts, feelings, and
application of Tradition 8.
Please send your response to the
editors at
newsletter@artsanonymous.org
for possible publication.

Tradition Seven – A Personal
Response
Tradition 7: Every A.R.T.S.
group ought to be fully
self-supporting, declining
outside contributions.
Tradition 7 has always been
double-edged for me. On the one
hand, I find it a very healthy
and courageous idea to go it
alone, funding-wise, for better
or for worse; so we’re beholden
to no one but ourselves. On the
other hand, my wistful dreamer
side wonders what “could be” if
the 12 Step rooms were more open
to seeking a broader range of
funding. At that point,
however, I recall a line I read
from the Alcoholics Anonymous
treasure, The 12 Steps and 12
Traditions. Tradition 6: “...
How natural [dreaming grandiose
‘let’s go big saving the world’
dreams] was, since most
[compulsives] are bankrupt
idealists. Nearly every one of
us had wished to do great good,
perform great deeds, and embody
great ideals. We are all
perfectionists who, failing
perfection, have gone to the
other extreme [deep into our
compulsions] …”

All members of A.R.T.S.
Anonymous are welcome to attend
a special one-day Conference for
the purposes of considering
Conference-Approval to
On Being the Perfect Artist,
and four updates to the 1993
Conference-approved version of
Facing Avoidance.
The Literature Committee and the
Board are committed to making
Conference-approved Literature
available to members. According
to the
Literature Development Process
approved by the Conference in
1995:
-
Editorial comments ...
address ... [the
Literature’s] adherence to
the principles of the
A.R.T.S. Twelve Steps,
Twelve Traditions, and
Twelve Concepts
-
Comments from A.R.T.S.
members are encouraged and
will be considered
-
Trustees are legally bound
by Conference mandate to
assure the Fellowship that
the principles of A.R.T.S.
Anonymous have been adhered
to throughout the work
-
The work is identifiably
A.R.T.S. Anonymous in
content and tone. It does
not reflect a single
member's philosophy or point
of view but reflects the
"collective conscience" of
A.R.T.S. Anonymous
Without the voice of the
membership and its chosen
representatives, it can be
difficult to trust that A.R.T.S.
Literature carries A.R.T.S.’
message to those who still
struggle to express their
creativity.
Delegates and Alternates were
emailed the specific motions
that will be considered on May
21, June 26 and July 9. If you
are a meeting Delegate or
Alternate, and feel you did not
get this document, please email
conference@artsanonymous.org
immediately so you will have
it.
The One-Day Special Conference
will be held on Zoom, beginning
at 4 pm ET. We will be using the
Community-Solving Method, and
etiquette and voting guidelines
apply. Registration is required,
and a donation is requested to
help cover expenses. We urge
meetings to contribute to the
attendance of their delegates,
as “Every A.R.T.S. group ought
to be fully self-supporting,
declining outside
contributions.”

information will be emailed to
