For 2024: Writings on the Steps

While the Twelve Traditions guide us in the primary purpose of A.R.T.S. Anonymous, the Twelve Steps guide us to recover our inspiration and joy in expressing our creativity. What better way to celebrate 2024 than with a focus on the Steps that corresponds with each of the twelve months. Below in this July newsletter is one member’s contribution on Step Seven.

June’s Newsletter welcomes your response to Step 8: Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

The following series of questions are suggested as a guide when writing a response.

  • What does Step 8 mean to you?
  • How do you feel about Step 8?
  • How might Step 8 free your creative expression?

It will be wonderful to receive your thoughts, feelings, and application of Step 8. Please send your response to the editors at newsletter@artsanonymous.org for possible publication.

Step Seven – A Personal Response

Step Seven: Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

Practicing Step 7 feels like I am preparing to approach a gate that is open, as it waits for me to cross its threshold. I understand what is on the other side is a warm loving acceptance, full of forgiving compassion. But I do not feel worthy of such a loving compassionate light to embrace me. At the same time, I am afraid that it will not be there at all. So, before I approach it, Step 7 guides me to spend time in prayer and meditation to meet with this loving spirit outside of the gate.

Next Up! The A.R.T.S. World Service Conference Planning Meeting, July 20, 2024

All members of ARTS are encouraged to attend. Everyone has a voice, and a vote, at the Conference Planning Meetings. Many come away surprised to find that they have contributions to make, aiding the program's self-supporting nature and one’s own personal recovery.

Delegates and/or Alternates are asked to come and make decisions for the World Service Conference (WSC) as it organizes itself and considers what is best for the Fellowship. Meeting Delegates and some Board members met on July 6 at the Agenda-Setting meeting and created the following items for discussion and consideration at the World Service Conference Planning Meeting.

  • A review of what the Literature Committee is doing
  • When to hold an Open Forum as part of the WSC in January 2025
  • The establishment of the World Service Conference Policy and Procedures (Article 6) Committee
  • Terms of service for the WSC Chair
  • Other positions for the WSC
  • Terms of service for Meeting Delegates (Group Service Representatives, or GSRs)
  • How to bring a motion to the WSC, including who
  • A due date for bringing motions for this upcoming WSC

Flyer and registration link are below. Welcome!

Protecting the Future of A.R.T.S. Anonymous

The Board of Trustees and the World Service Office recently took the step of ensuring the protection of A.R.T.S. trademarks (“A.R.T.S. Anonymous” and “Artists Recovering Through the Twelve Steps”), by registering them with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Registration of the copyrights of A.R.T.S. Conference-Approved Literature with the United States Library of Congress has also begun. Part of our job as a Board and at World Services is to use its legal and fiscal obligations to protect the Fellowship’s property on its behalf.

Why is it so important to protect our trademarks and copyrights? This is first and foremost about the integrity of the A.R.T.S. message and the need to protect A.R.T.S.’ property so A.R.T.S. can continue to own its own material.

What is the Literature Committee Up to?

Some of you have been asking about A.R.T.S. Literature, and there is the hope that those who have attended some of the recent Literature Committee meetings as observers or simply to see what is going on have felt welcomed. All of us contribute to the future of A.R.T.S. Anonymous by ensuring that the combined experience, strength and hope reflected in the membership is shared beyond the groups and meetings.

There are six members of the Literature Committee; members are voted on by the Committee. In addition, all Committee members and others interested serve on Sub-Committees. Per the A.R.T.S. Literature Development/Approval Process, as passed by the 2023 World Service Conference, the Committee reviews the work done by the Sub-Committee and makes recommendations to the Board of Trustees. In cooperation with the Literature Committee, these recommendations are reviewed, developed and sent to the Conference for approval. If you wish to join a meeting or a Subcommittee, please email literature@artsanonymous.org.

Here are summaries of the Sub-Committees currently preparing material for eventual possible Conference-Approval:

God, grant me the serenity

To accept the things I cannot change;

Courage to change the things I can;

And wisdom to know the difference.
