For 2023: Writings on the Traditions

While the Twelve Steps of A.R.T.S Anonymous guide us to recover our inspiration and joy in expressing our creativity, the Twelve Traditions guide our focus on our primary purpose in A.R.T.S. Anonymous. What better way to begin this new year of 2023 than with a focus on the Tradition that corresponds with each of the twelve months. Below in this June issue of the newsletter is one member’s personal response to Tradition 6.

June’s Newsletter welcomes your response to Tradition 7: Every A.R.T.S. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions.

We suggest the following series of questions when writing your response.

  • What does Tradition 7 mean to you?
  • How do you feel about Tradition 7?
  • How may Tradition 7 help your creative expression?

It will be wonderful to receive your thoughts, feelings, and application of Tradition 7. Please send your response to the editors at newsletter@artsanonymous.org for possible publication.

Tradition Six – A Personal Response

Tradition 6: An A.R.T.S. group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the A.R.T.S. name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.

I am not a dyed-in-the-wool expert on the Traditions, but here is my take on Tradition 6:

Definition: An A.R.T.S. “group” is any collection of A.R.T.S. members coming together for a common purpose.  The most common example is A.R.T.S. meetings, but also includes committees, workshops, and any other ad hoc group of members, up to and including the Board of Trustees.

Logic: The underlying logic behind Tradition 6 is the necessity of maintaining a safe environment for our members, each of whom is entitled to his or her own experience, strength, hope and opinions.  While we do elect “visible” members to a Board of Trustees, they do not govern, and neither they, nor any other A.R.T.S. group, can claim to represent or speak for A.R.T.S. as a whole.  (A singular exception would be where governmental or other legal participation is required, such as filing taxes.)  So, by not putting ourselves in the position of having opinions or taking actions purporting to represent A.R.T.S. as a whole, we ensure the safety and anonymity of our members.

And finally, the most obvious aspect of Tradition 6:  If we were to lend our name to any facility or outside enterprise, we would automatically be obliged to make decisions which, to varying degrees, would have to take into account that relationship, and therefore divert us from our primary purpose – to express our creative gifts and help others to achieve artistic freedom.

a prayer for serenity (ayreÁnna R)

                                           God, please grant me the

                                           serenity to accept

                                           pain in my body,

                                           the courage to pause

                                           and acknowledge its subtle,

                                           and not so subtle

                                           messages, and the

                                           wisdom to hear its wisdom,

                                           to better discern

                                           and care for its needs.

                                           may i honor my body,

                                           the one vehicle

                                           i have for being

here. may i learn how to care

                                           for it in pain and

                                           in full vibrancy,

to not push it farther than

                                           it can go, to rest

                                           when it is weary,

to dance when it wants to move,

                                           to be still when it

                                           is telling me to

stop and listen to the birds,

                                           to feel the moisture

                                           in the morning air,

to drink in the fragrance of

                                           just-watered soil, to

                                           observe and delight

                                           in the myriad shades of

                                           green, and relish the

                                           bittersweet tea in

my mouth. God, please grant me the

                                           serenity to

                                           slow down and be here,

the courage to live from the

                                           remembrance of the

                                           abiding peace which

                                           lives within, the wisdom to

                                           walk the middle path.

May the Force of the Zoom-a-thon Be with You!

Saturday May 27 was Donna D.’s last time leading and organizing the Zoom-a-thon. And it was the 24th one – two years of devoted service. Wow. For those who have participated and seen her in action, we are incredibly grateful and indebted to what she has accomplished. For those who don’t know, the Zoom-a-thon is a big, huge global event where A.R.T.S. members from all over the world come together to celebrate our gifts, our creativity, and our recovery as we work toward artistic freedom. Donna would say that it’s a big party. She will be around to consult for a time, but it is up to others to continue the Zoom-a-thon.  Email: zoomathon@artsanonymous.org
