For 2023: Writings on the Traditions

While the Twelve Steps of A.R.T.S Anonymous guide us to recover our inspiration and joy in expressing our creativity, the Twelve Traditions guide our focus on our primary purpose in A.R.T.S. Anonymous. What better way to celebrate 2023 than with a focus on the Tradition that corresponds with each of the twelve months. Below in this October issue of the newsletter is one member’s personal response to Tradition 10.

October’s Newsletter welcomes your response to Tradition 11: Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio and films.

We suggest the following series of questions when writing your response.

  • What does Tradition 11 mean to you?
  • How do you feel about Tradition 11?
  • How may Tradition 11 help your creative expression?

It will be wonderful to receive your thoughts, feelings, and application of Tradition 11. Please send your response to the editors at newsletter@artsanonymous.org for possible publication.

Tradition Ten – A Personal Response

Tradition 10: A.R.T.S. has no opinion on outside issues; hence the A.R.T.S. name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

This tradition tells me there is a safeguard for members at the meeting level and at the organizational level of A.R.T.S. Anonymous.  The focus is on the issues pertaining to recovering our desire to express and identify our creativity (Tradition Three) and how we grow and thrive when doing so.

At the meeting level, an artist may share artwork in response to the destructive impact immigration policy may have on the institution of the family unit. It could be that the artist creates an art piece that reaches the viewer in a way that evokes thought and emotion toward the situation. A member’s comment is welcome when the focus is on the craft of the artist to affect the viewer, rather than a comment on the issue. A conversation that slides into a discussion about immigration policy is discouraged because the discussion is no longer about the artwork.  Otherwise, the conversation invites argument and puts our common welfare and unity at risk (Tradition Two). The purpose for members to meet and share recovery creating artwork could get lost.

Coming to the World Service Conference:
An Update to the A.R.T.S. Tools

What do the A.R.T.S. Tools mean to you? How do you feel about them? Are they shared in your meeting? How do they help recovery? In doing your art?

Many members have found the Tools to be very helpful in the practical application of their recovery to their art. By taking regular actions hope can be found when experiencing the results. For example, in meetings there is a safe place to say, “I am an artist,” or “I need a buddy to help me do my art,” or “what can I do to help carry the message?” Attending meetings is a Tool: where do we learn to recover from the blocks and patterns of avoidance that otherwise prevent us from expressing our creativity?

There is a new Sharathon in Town!

A fairly new group has been meeting since May. It formed in response to a past desire for a platform to share and celebrate our creativity, called SHARATHON.  All the artmaking that is happening within our fellowship of artists merits being seen, heard and enjoyed by all.  We are meeting to elevate this desire into a real event. We are a productive fun bunch of people, who practice group-consciences decision making. We have already passed several motions within our purpose, as we go forward.  We think it is important for your voice to be heard as decisions emerge on how to make this a fun, exciting, safe, and rewarding event for all.

Come on over! Join us! We meet every other Wednesday. The dates and times are posted on the A.R.T.S. website under the tab SHARATHON.  For more information, email: sharathon@artsanonymous.org.
