For 2023: Writings on the Traditions

While the Twelve Steps of A.R.T.S. Anonymous guide us to recover our inspiration and joy in expressing our creativity, the Twelve Traditions guide our focus on our primary purpose in A.R.T.S. Anonymous. In 2023 there is a focus on the Tradition that corresponds with each of the twelve months. Below in this September issue of the newsletter is one member’s personal response to Tradition 9.

October's’s Newsletter welcomes your response to Tradition 10: A.R.T.S. has no opinion on outside issues; hence the A.R.T.S. name ought never be drawn into public controversy.

We suggest the following series of questions when writing your response.

  • What does Tradition 10 mean to you?
  • How do you feel about Tradition 10?
  • How may Tradition 10 help your creative expression?

It will be wonderful to receive your thoughts, feelings, and application of Tradition 10. Please send your response to the editors at newsletter@artsanonymous.org for possible publication.

Tradition Nine – A Personal Response

Tradition 9: A.R.T.S., as such, ought never be organized; but we may create service boards or committees directly responsible to those they serve.

After a careful observation of this tradition, it seems to me that it contains several small segments, the meaning of each is helping to define the other, but also is marking boundaries within them to arrive to a secured intent.

1. So, the first segment would be the phrase, “A.R.T.S … ought never be organized.” Well if organization is a characteristic of the human mind and body, which allows control and perhaps a sense of safety, what I think is happening here is:

Emphasizing that A.R.T.S. aims further and beyond mere organizing, introduces  the state of letting go in order to create the possibility of letting the Higher Power take over in a situation related to our art or our life in general.

2. But we may “create service boards and committees.” This answers the question which may be brought in the minds of many; ‘If all I need to do is let go and let God what should I do next?’  Well Tradition 9 answers: ‘You may do as much footwork as you like (create boards and committees abundantly) but with one thought in mind:

Delegate Packet for the World Service Conference – 2023

All members of A.R.T.S. Anonymous are welcome to view the 2023 World Service Conference Delegate Packet on the A.R.T.S. website. Your meeting Delegates and Alternate Delegates were emailed this Packet and are there to discuss any of it with your meeting.

Much of the Conference will focus on various aspects of the A.R.T.S. message, including Traits, Tools and Literature. At the last Conference in 2022, the Delegates asked the Literature Committee to review the Traits, Talents and Tools and propose updates to unify the numerous versions of these in circulation. Although that task is not yet complete, much of this year’s Conference will be looking at and voting on a few updates for the Traits, and a more comprehensive set of updates for the Tools.

Also at the last World Service in 2022, the Literature Committee was charged with revising the Literature Approval Process...

Why Conference-Approved Literature?

The World Service Conference in October will be considering an updated Literature Development and Approval Process (click here to view), and recently I heard the question asked by a Delegate; why would we want Conference-approved Literature?

Let’s begin with:

Tradition One: Our common welfare should come first; personal recovery depends upon A.R.T.S. unity.

In service material titled Conference-Approved Literature provided by the General Service Office of Alcoholics Anonymous, there appears the following statement, “Conference approval assures us that a piece of literature represents solid A.A. experience.” It also tells us “The term ‘Conference-approved’ describes written or audiovisual material approved by the Conference for publication... This process assures that everything in such literature is in accord with A. A. principles. Conference-approved material always deals with the recovery program of Alcoholics Anonymous or with information about the A. A. Fellowship.”

Al-Anon Family Groups publishes a pamphlet called, Why Conference Approved Literature? In 1961, its World Service Conference “set up a process to make sure the Al-Anon literature accurately expresses Al-Anon policies and principles. Literature bearing the seal... has been designated ‘Conference Approved Literature’... and has been through a rigorous committee review process. It was also examined for adherence to Al-Anon's Traditions and policies... This encourages Al-Anon unity and assures that the Al-Anon message at our meetings is clear and consistent.”
